A strengthening Tropical Storm Isaac targeted a broad swath of the Gulf Coast on Monday and had New Orleans in its crosshairs, bearing down ahead of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

As of 8 p.m. ET, Isaac was pushing toward the northwest at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. The storm was centered roughly 295 miles south-southeast of Mobile, Ala. Forecasters predict the storm will become a hurricane soon, with significant storm surge and flood threat from rainfall expected along the northern Gulf coast.

During its entire life from its pre-T.D. formative stages through now, Ernesto has been ebbing and flowing between tightening up and looking more impressive, and not being able to sustain that and instead struggling to be anything more than an energetic tropical wave.

Today, it’s decidedly in the latter mode, in fact the latest aircraft recon which is investigating the storm has had a hard time finding any westerly winds, which are necessary for a “closed” circulation, an essential characteristic of a tropical cyclone, and the convection is quite ragged, and there’s a low cloud swirl — what “center” there is — “exposed” on visible satellite imagery.

Google

In a move that could make it harder for its users to remain anonymous, Google said it would start combining nearly all the information it has on its users.

This could mean, for instance, that when users search via Google, the company will use their activities on sister sites like Gmail and YouTube to influence those users’ search results. Google has not done that before. View full article »

Get ready: Tuesday is iPhone day.

Tim Cook will take the stage for the first time as Apple’s new permanent CEO Tuesday morning, replacing the recently-retired Steve Jobs to reveal the company’s newest gadgets. Cook may not be the star that Jobs has become, but sources at Apple assure me that the holiday product lineup will be the real star of the event. View full article »

How can you complain about something that’s free?

More to the point, how can you complain about something you don’t even have to use?

These questions came to the fore as Facebook dealt with another barrage of criticism after delivering a convoluted, confused, and cluttered update last week (and it’s not finished with the update yet). Members were mighty displeased with the changes: an irrelevant ticker of friends commenting on comments, commenting on comments, ad infinitum and a news feed that makes Google’s defunct Wave look like a paragon of simplicity.
