‘Obama Not Welcome’: Filipinos Protest Presidential Visit

Police armed with truncheons, shields and a fire hose clashed with more than 100 left-wing activists who rallied at the U.S. Embassy in Manila on Wednesday to oppose a visit by President Barack Obama and an expected security pact that would increase the American military presence in the Philippines.

Some of the protesters carried paper U.S. flags with the message: “Obama not welcome.”

Pope to travel to Holy Land in May amid Peace Push

Pope Francis will travel to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan in May, his first visit to the Holy Land and one that comes amid a new U.S. push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Francis told thousands gathered in the rain for his weekly Sunday blessing that “in the climate of joy that is typical of the Christmas season,” he was announcing a visit May 24-26 to Amman, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. It is the only papal trip confirmed so far for 2014 and the second foreign trip of Francis’ pontificate, following his 2013 visit to Brazil for World Youth Day.

A Secret Service official says the agency is investigating news reports of other trips in which agents allegedly engaged the services of prostitutes while traveling abroad in advance of the president.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing investigations, said the agency is trying to determine whether the reports are accurate.

With former President George W. Bush traveling abroad this week in Africa to promote AIDS relief efforts and raise awareness of cervical and breast cancer, Amnesty International is urging three nations to arrest him during his visit for “crimes under international law.”

The world’s largest human rights group said Thursday that “there is enough evidence in the public domain” to justify either EthiopiaTanzania and Zambia arresting the former president during his expected visit to the region, which started Thursday and lasts until Monday.
