The 9th Circuit Court in California struck down the state’s voter-passed ban on gay marriage, ruling 2-1 that it violates the rights of gay Californians.

“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples,” Judge Reinhardt wrote in the decision. The Court concludes that the law violates the 14th Amendment rights of gay couples to equal protection under the law. A computer hacker group on Friday continued a wave of attacks against Brazilian financial websites, hampering the sites of Citigroup Inc. and other prominent institutions.

The group, which dubbed itself Anonymous Brasil, took aim at a series of websites, launching “denial of service” attacks against the pages of the Brazilian banking federation, called Febraban, as well as Banco BMG, Banco Panamericano and the pages of Citigroup both in Brazil and in the U.S. View full article »

A highly-classified U.S. report that said the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, is ready to take control in Afghanistan was not an analysis of the military campaign’s progress, a NATO spokesman said Wednesday.

The document, leaked to The London Times, “may provide some level of representative sampling of Taliban opinions and ideals but clearly should not be used as any interpretation of campaign progress,” Lieutenant Colonel Jimmie Cummings told AFP. View full article »
