Warning issued about Oil shipped from ND, Mont.

Following a string of explosive accidents, federal officials said Thursday that crude oil being shipped by rail from the Northern Plains across the U.S. and Canada may be more flammable than traditional forms of oil.

A safety alert issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation warns the public, emergency responders and shippers about the potential high volatility of crude from the Bakken oil shale patch. The massive oil reserve is fueling the surging industry in eastern Montana and western North Dakota, which is now the nation’s second-largest oil producer.

Pope Francis denounced the global financial system that excludes the poor as he issued the mission statement for his papacy on Tuesday, saying he wants the Catholic Church to get its hands dirty as it seeks to bring solace and mercy to society’s outcasts.

In a 224-page document, Francis pulled together the priorities he has laid out over eight months of homilies, speeches and interviews, pushing to shift the church away from a focus on doctrine to one of joyful welcome in a bid to draw in believers in a world marked by secularization and vast income inequalities.

A Houston-area community college went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon amid reports of a shooter on campus.

A shooting on a Texas community college campus wounded at least two people Tuesday and sent students fleeing for safety as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said. Authorities had at least one person in custody and wounded, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case. The official said local authorities also thought there could be a second shooter.

A strong earthquake has struck waters of western Indonesia, prompting local officials to issue a tsunami warning.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck 260 miles off the coast of Aceh province. The USGS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive, widespread tsunami is not expected, although there is a “very small possibility” of a local tsunami.

The earthquake was centered 18.1 miles beneath the ocean floor. View full article »
