Scientists have developed the gadget that can be inserted into packets of perishable foods, which will be able to assess when the contents are nearing their use-by date, an EU committee of peers has heard.

Butter is back.

Despite years of being warned that butter is bad for you, Americans are looking the other way. Sales of the rich stuff now top $2 billion a year in the U.S. — a 65% increase since 2000 . The American Butter Institute also reports that per-capita consumption is now at a 40-year high of 5.6 pounds.

In other words, there’s a whole lot of spreading going on.

Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash – sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist – and then asking the government for replacement cards.

The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.

In a new ad campaign launching next week, Kraft Foods Inc. is hoping to boost sales by encouraging consumers to use its dressings in a limitless variety of dishes – as a dip, a spread, a marinade or perhaps a glaze. In case the message isn’t clear, the packaged foods giant is even rebranding its lineup of dressings as “Anything Dressing.”

National Guard helicopters began taking food and water Tuesday to Vermont towns cut off by flooding after the rainy remnants of Hurricane Irene took inland areas of New England and upstate New York by surprise.

Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma said the helicopters would bring relief to people in about a dozen towns where roads and bridges were washed out, including Cavendish, Hancock, Pittsfield, Stockbridge, Strafford and Stratton. View full article »
