‘Ninja Turtles’ kicks out Box-office Competitione

The reptile reboot “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” held off a trio of new challengers at the weekend box office.

The Paramount Pictures release took in $28.5 million in its second week, besting the Fox buddy comedy “Let’s Be Cops,” Lionsgate’s poor-performing action-hero smorgasbord “The Expendables 3” and the Weinstein Co.’s young-adult novel adaptation “The Giver.”

‘Transformers’ unearths $100M Debut at Box Office

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” is ruling the box office.

The fourth installment in filmmaker Michael Bay’s morphing robots series earned $100 million in North America during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie this year, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Paramount blockbuster outperformed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and its $95 million inauguration in April.

“The Avengers” has extended its box-office superpowers with a record $207.4 million opening weekend domestically, an even bigger start than originally projected.

Final figures from distributor Disney on Monday put the film’s debut $7.1 million higher than the studio had estimated a day earlier.

With a superstar cast, great reviews and glowing word of mouth from fans, “The Avengers” bounded past the previous record of $169.2 million set by last year’s “Harry Potter” finale.

Iron Man and his fellow avengers are off to a solid start as they bring their save-the-world act to U.S. theaters.

“The Avengers” launched domestically early Friday with $18.7 million from midnight screenings. That puts it at No. 8 all-time for midnight debuts, just behind the $19.7 million start for “The Hunger Games” in March.

But it’s well under half the amount for the No. 1 midnight draw – the “Harry Potter” finale last fall with $43.5 million.
