Olympic Threat: US warns Airlines about Toothpaste Tube Bomb

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning to U.S. and some foreign airlines traveling to Russia for the Olympic Games to be on the lookout for toothpaste containers, which some intelligence indicates may actually hold ingredients that could be used to construct a bomb aboard a plane, a senior U.S. official says.

The official did not provide further details about the warning or the intelligence that prompted it, but an official with the Department of Homeland Security, while declining to discuss the specific warning, said the department “regularly shares relevant information with domestic and international partners, including those associated with international events such as the Sochi Olympics.”

The Boston Marathon bombers were headed for New York to blow up their remaining explosives in Times Square when they were intercepted by police in a blazing gunbattle, officials said Thursday.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told interrogators from his hospital bed that he and his older brother had decided spontaneously last Thursday night to drive to New York and launch an attack. In their stolen SUV they had five pipe bombs and a pressure-cooker explosive like the ones that blew up at the marathon, Kelly said.

Two bombs exploded in the packed streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 130 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S.

A White House official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still unfolding said the attack was being treated as an act of terrorism.

Police in Los Angeles, New York City, London and other cities worldwide stepped up security Monday following explosions at the Boston Marathon.

Los Angeles police Lt. Andrew Neiman said the department was urging officers to be extra vigilant around large crowds and would increase security at sporting events such as the Los Angeles Dodgers game Monday night.

The department was also activating its emergency operations center to increase communication and increasing patrols for transit and other critical areas, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Police are investigating after several homemade acid bombs were planted on the Valencia College campus in Orlando, Fla., cfnews13.com reports.

A total of seven bottles were found in parking lots along walkways near buildings, the station reports. Two of the bottles exploded Friday night, about 100 yards apart. View full article »

So, did “SNL” producers make a big mistake by booking Del Rey, who has yet to release her major label debut album, for such a high-profile appearance so early–or by booking her at all?
