A large earthquake that originated in Kansas was felt by residents across Oklahoma, Wednesday afternoon.

The 4.8 magnitude temblor rumbled at 3:40 p.m., eight miles to the south of Conway Springs, Kansas, or about 124 miles north of the Oklahoma City metro, at a depth of three miles.

After weeks of slow, stop-and-go movement, a river of asphalt-black lava was within yards of a home in a Big Island community Tuesday.

The lava crackled and smoked as it advanced toward the two-story structure in Pahoa Village, smothering an expanse of vegetation.

Delivering the weather has put a whole new group of celebrities on the national radar: meteorologists. But what path did they take to become so well known? For some, it was a childhood obsession with storms; for others, it was a fortuitous but unpredictable turn of events.

With the Atlantic hurricane season opening Sunday, TV viewers nationwide could see a lot more of these three men if a storm hits: Jim Cantore and Bryan Norcross of The Weather Channel, and Max Mayfield, the retired director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

A state official says a massive tornado that passed through or near several northern suburbs of Little Rock killed at least one person.

Brandon Morris, a spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, says that White County officials reported to the state that at least one person was killed by the tornado as it passed through their county.

Full Lunar Eclipse delight Americas, 1st of Year

Sky-gazers in North and South America were treated to a full lunar eclipse – at least those fortunate enough to have clear skies.

The moon was eclipsed by the Earth’s shadow early Tuesday, beginning around 1 a.m. EDT for 5 1/2 hours. The total phase of the eclipse lasted just 78 minutes.

NOLA has one of the Coldest Mardi Gras Ever

It was a cold, wet day for Mardi Gras participants in New Orleans Tuesday.

The high temperature hit 39 degrees for the Big Easy, more than 20 degrees below the date’s average temperature of 69 degrees. It will rests at the coldest high temperature on record for a Mardi Gras, which was 39 degrees on Feb. 14, 1899.

It might be because of the cold weather but the big game may not be such a hot ticket.
On Tuesday afternoon, there were still 18,000 tickets available for the Super Bowl, CBS 2′s Emily Smith reported.

The NFL’s biggest game of the season draws fans from around the world to its host city, but this year the game is in New Jersey, the forecast is frigid, and thousands of tickets are still available.

ERIC SCOTT RADIO | LAKE CHARLES, LA. — The Calcasieu Correctional Center and the Calcasieu Sheriff’s Prison has suspended inmate visitation for Tuesday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 29 due to the expected inclement weather. For those who were scheduled for an inmate visit on either of these days, they may call beginning Thursday morning to reschedule a visit. The number to call the CCC is 491-3768 and the number to call the CSP is 491-1300.

The Tax Office will be closed due to the weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will reopen at 8:30 Thursday morning.
