Taylor Swift is the top nominee for the American Country Awards.

A Tuesday news release says Swift received eight nominations, including top honor artist of the year. Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line are next with seven apiece.

The fourth annual fan-voted ACAs will be broadcast Dec. 10 from Las Vegas on Fox with NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and country singer Trace Adkins serving as co-hosts.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs by hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The public can bring their medications for disposal to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office at 5400 E. Broad Street in Lake Charles on Saturday, April 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host the Annual Senior Citizen’s Fishing Derby on Friday, May 3 from 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the CPSO Farm Pond behind the Calcasieu Correctional Center at 5400 E. Broad Street in Lake Charles.

Participants are asked to bring their own fishing gear (only one per person, please). The CPSO will provide help in baiting the lines, removing fish from the hook, if requested, and bait shrimp for catching catfish.

Thirty-four (34) cadets representing Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lake Charles Police Department, Jennings Police Department, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office, Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office, Rayne Police Department, Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ward 3 Marshal’s Office, Merryville Police Department, Sulphur Police Department, DeRidder Police Department, Lake Charles Harbor Police Department, have participated in this graduating class.

As the Superdome’s energy provider and stadium management try to determine what caused a 34-minute power outage at Sunday’s Super Bowl, local officials are hoping the incident won’t leave a black eye on the city or prevent the league’s big game from coming back to town.

Larry Roedel, a lawyer for the state board that oversees the Superdome, said Monday that the outage did not appear to be related to work done on the stadium’s electrical system in December. The work, approved by the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District last fall, replaced feeder equipment connecting the stadium to power provider Entergy New Orleans.

Commemorative events for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. slid seamlessly into celebrations of the swearing-in Monday of the nation’s first black president, with many Americans moved by the reminder of how far the country has come since the 1960s.

“This is the dream that Dr. King talked about in his speech. We see history in the making,” said Joyce Oliver, who observed King Day by visiting the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., built on the site of the old Lorraine Motel, where King was assassinated in 1968.
