ERIC SCOTT RADIO | LAKE CHARLES, LA. — On May 1, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T. Team) Detectives Cpl. Kevin Hoover and Pfc. Chad Booth conducted a stop on a car traveling eastbound on I-10 between Vinton and Sulphur for a traffic violation.

When the driver of the car, Karl M. Rankine, 28, Tamarack, Florida, began to act suspiciously, Cpl. Hoover asked for permission to search the car and he refused.

Cpl. Hoover then allowed his trained and certified drug detection K-9 “Mako” to conduct a free air sniff around the car. After Mako provided a positive response to the odor of controlled substance coming from the car, a search was conducted and a black suitcase containing approximately 5 pounds of marijuana wrapped in cellophane and duct tape, with an estimated street value of $6,000, was recovered from the trunk of the car.

During further investigation, detectives discovered Rankine had an active warrant for his arrest for the charge of armed robbery in Broward County, Florida.

Rankine was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with possession of CDS I (marijuana) with intent to distribute.

Judge Robert Wyatt set his bond at $50,000.
