ERIC SCOTT RADIO | LAKE CHARLES, LA. — On March 9, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T. Team) Detective Cpl. Kevin Hoover conducted a stop on an SUV traveling eastbound on I-10 near the Enterprise Blvd. exit in Lake Charles for a traffic violation.

After the driver of the SUV, James A. Sims, 35, 4067 Marriana Road, Holly Springs, MS, began to act suspiciously during the traffic stop, Cpl. Hoover allowed his trained and certified drug detection K9 “Mako” to conduct a free air sniff around the SUV. After Mako provided a positive response to the odor of a controlled substance, Sims advised he and two other passengers had smoked marijuana in the SUV approximately 2 hours prior.

During a subsequent search of the SUV, Cpl. Hoover recovered a .40 caliber handgun with a 10 round magazine in the firearm. After running the firearm through NCIC, Cpl. Hoover discovered the firearm had been reported stolen through Houston Police Department in 2010.

Sims was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with illegal possession of a stolen firearm; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released on March 11 on a $14,000 bond set by Judge Ron Ware.
